Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy
What is MBCT?
Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) was initially developed to help people who are prone to recurring depression. MCBT combines mindfulness techniques (like meditation, breathing exercises and stretching) with elements from cognitive therapy to help break the negative thought patterns that are characteristic of depression and anxiety disorders.
Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is effective for people with recurring episodes of depression or unhappiness, to prevent relapse, as well as for those who have cravings for addictive substances. It can also be effective in the treatment of many different anxiety disorders and is commonly used for stress reduction.
How does it work and is it effective?
- You and your therapist will agree a duration for your tailor made MBCT programme.
- You will learn meditation techniques and the relationship between the way you think and how you feel. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about your depressive condition.
- Homework is set between sessions, which include practicing breathing exercises and mindful
- The mindfulness techniques will teach you how to refocus your mind on being in the present moment rather than become overly focused on either regrets of the past or worries about the future.
- MBCT is effective in reducing the risk of relapse for people who experience recurrent depression by 43%, and is strongly recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence for the prevention of relapse in recurrent depression.
